Courtney Clenney asked a Miami-Dade judge on July 1 to let her defense use Christian Obumseli’s 2020 Austin arrest warrant if prosecutors portray him as peaceful or nonviolent. The filing pushes a pretrial fight over what jurors will hear about the 2022 death of Christian Obumseli and how the pair’s relationship is described before a self-defense murder trial.

Clenney is charged with second-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of Obumseli. Her lawyers say she acted “in self-defense and as a battered spouse,” and they asked to block the state from using alleged prior violent incidents against her while reserving the right to respond with the warrant if the state opens that subject.
The defense wants the warrant admitted only if the state describes Obumseli as peaceful, gentle, passive or nonviolent. In the same filing, the lawyers said the warrant accused him of cruelty to a nonlivestock animal in Travis County, Texas, and listed an offense date of Nov. 2, 2020.

The motion says apartment staff found Obumseli’s dead dog, Halo, confined inside a kennel in a closet after an apartment had been abandoned. It says investigators found food in the kennel but no water and feces surrounding the animal. A veterinary pathologist concluded the dog’s most likely cause of death was dehydration from water deprivation.
According to the filing, investigators believed Halo had been dead for five to seven days before being discovered. The defense also says Obumseli gave “vague, confusing, and conflicting” accounts about the dog’s death. The warrant does not show how the case was resolved.
June 29 evidence fight
The July 1 filing followed a June 29 motion in which Clenney’s lawyers argued prosecutors are presenting a misleading snippet of the February 2022 elevator video. The defense says the state wants to use that video to show Clenney striking Obumseli, pulling his hair and continuing to hit him before the doors open and he can escape.
That dispute leaves the judge with a narrow but important pretrial decision: whether the state can paint Obumseli as nonviolent while the defense answers with the 2020 warrant, and whether the elevator video can be used in the form prosecutors want. The ruling will shape how much of the couple’s history reaches jurors when the murder case goes forward.
