Virginia Beach election results were still unofficial Tuesday night as the Virginia Department of Elections reported local returns across Hampton Roads at 11 p.m. The results will not be final until Dec. 7, leaving voters with only a partial picture of races that drew steady turnout.
Voters in Southeastern Virginia were selecting new representatives for governing boards and top jobs across the region. Bob Oberosler said he voted at the East Ocean View Community Center in Norfolk because national, state and local issues all pulled him to the polls.
“I wasn’t ready to agree on raising taxes for that,” he said, referring to the proposed 1% sales tax increase for school construction. He also said, “A couple of the constitutional provisions, I had a pretty strong view on those. And then I think it’s important to vote in any federal election.”
Krystol Greene at Virginia Beach polls
Krystol Greene voted at Good Samaritan Episcopal Church in Virginia Beach and said “the price of everything” was on her mind. She added, “You can’t complain and not do anything about it” and, “It’s time for our voice to be heard.”
Ahead of Tuesday, the Department of Justice requested access to send observers inside Virginia Beach polling places, and civil rights groups made the same request. Virginia Beach's Electoral Board denied those requests, while federal monitors still appeared outside some polling places as allowed by state election officials.
Dec. 7 certification
The returns reported Tuesday night remained unofficial until certification on Dec. 7. For readers tracking Virginia Beach election results, that means the numbers posted before midnight were a live snapshot, not the final count that settles the races.
