Ukrainian drones sank the Yanina container ship in the Black Sea near Novorossiysk early Saturday. Rosatom said the vessel began to sink after at least two strikes, and the 17-member crew abandoned ship before rescue teams brought all 17 aboard in good condition.
Rosatom and FESCO
Rosatom said the Yanina was a cargo vessel operated by FESCO, its shipping subsidiary, and that it was carrying civilian goods including frozen food and construction materials. Alexei Likhachev said, "Such an attack cannot be interpreted as anything other than piracy and robbery at sea".
Rosatom also said there was no immediate indication that the vessel was carrying out activities related to Rosatom's nuclear arm or carrying nuclear material. That detail matters because the ship was moving as a commercial vessel, not as a ship tied to Rosatom's nuclear work, and the cargo list points to ordinary freight rather than specialized material.
Black Sea Shipping Route
The attack fits a pattern that has kept the Black Sea hazardous for shipping during the nearly four-and-a-half year war. Kyiv has accused Russia of using the waterway to transport sanctioned goods, including oil, while Russia has launched multiple strikes on Ukrainian port infrastructure and ships approaching Ukrainian ports since the war began.
Ukraine did not immediately comment. For people tied to cargo moving through Russia and Ukraine, the immediate fact is that a vessel in commercial service was struck, the crew got off safely, and the ship did not stay afloat long enough to remain in operation.
