Jose Soriano’s status is now a real talking point ahead of the 2026 MLB trade deadline after he was scratched from his scheduled start against the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday.
The Los Angeles Angels right-hander had been one of the players most likely to move before Monday at 6 p.m. ET, and the timing only adds weight to the idea that clubs are watching him closely. Soriano is not just a rental arm either. He is a controllable starter who could help a contender immediately while remaining under team control for multiple seasons.

Jon Heyman described Soriano as a strong trade candidate, and that label makes sense given both his current form and his contractual value. For a team looking for pitching help, Soriano offers more than a short-term fix. He brings a season line of 9-6 with a 3.29 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 127 strikeouts and 123 innings across 22 appearances.
That is the profile contenders tend to target at this stage of the season. He has been effective enough to draw attention, and young enough in team-control terms to matter beyond this year. For the Angels, that creates a difficult decision: whether to keep a useful arm in a season already going badly, or listen if a meaningful return is available.
What the recent form says
Soriano’s recent outings have only strengthened his case. On July 26, he held the San Francisco Giants scoreless over five innings, allowing three hits and striking out five in a 4-3 Angels victory. Before that, he worked seven innings and allowed two runs against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Those are the kinds of starts that make a pitcher appealing to rivals. He has shown enough consistency to suggest he can slot into a contender’s rotation without much adjustment. That is why his scratch against the Brewers matters so much. Even when the reason is not immediately clear, the optics around a starter like Soriano can quickly become part of deadline speculation.
The Angels’ deadline decision
The Angels entered Saturday last in the American League West with a 42-68 record, which places the franchise in a familiar but uncomfortable position as the deadline approaches. In that context, moving Soriano would fit the logic of a club weighing present results against future value.
