Kevin Gausman said on July 31, 2026 that he has not had extension talks with the Blue Jays, a notable update with Monday afternoon's trade deadline approaching.
The right-hander is in the final season of the five-year, $110MM contract he signed with Toronto, and the team faces a deadline decision if it wants to move him and potentially gain compensation before he departs. Gausman has also made clear that he is open to an extension, but for now those discussions have not started.
A veteran who has been steady for Toronto
The lack of talks stands out because Gausman has been one of the most dependable arms on the roster. From 2022 through 2025, he started 31 or 32 games every season and posted a combined 3.48 ERA with a 26.3% strikeout rate and a 6.3% walk rate.
He followed that by logging a 3.59 ERA in 32 starts in 2025, then added a 2.93 ERA over 30 2/3 postseason frames. That track record helps explain why Toronto has to weigh his short-term value against the possibility of losing him at the end of the year.
Why the deadline matters now
Gausman’s recent stretch has made the decision more complicated. From mid-June through mid-July 2026, he allowed 25 runs in 28 2/3 innings, a rough run that comes at exactly the wrong time for a contender-facing trade market.
The Blue Jays also have to navigate his 8-team no-trade clause, while interest around the league has helped shape the conversation. The Phillies have been frequently linked to Gausman over the past week, adding another layer to an already sensitive situation.
Gausman has been open about his affinity for Toronto and the bittersweet reality of a possible move. He said, “I don’t want to go anywhere,” and added, “When I think about myself, I think of myself as a Blue Jay.” He also said, “I don’t want to leave any of these guys,” while calling the group “really special.”
Still, he also acknowledged the limits of his control: “There’s a little bit in my control, but there’s also a lot that’s not.” That is the reality Toronto now has to sort through before Monday afternoon.
