National Night Out 2026 is set for August 4 and later dates across the Triangle and other North Carolina communities, with Raleigh listing 21 locations for this year’s observance. Some cities are moving their events to cooler dates, while Hoke County has already pushed its gathering back a week because of forecasted weather.
Raleigh’s 21 locations run from 3 p.m. until 8:30 p.m., and the city’s schedule includes North Hills from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., Oakwood Commons Park from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Renaissance Park from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The Raleigh Police Department also asked residents to leave porch lights on from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Chapel Hill and Carrboro
The Chapel Hill Police Department is hosting National Night Out at the Hargraves Center at 216 N. Roberson St, Chapel Hill, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The Carrboro Town Commons at 301 W. Main Street will host its event during the same two-hour window.
Those local schedules show how the annual observance is being spread across different sites and hours rather than kept to a single evening block. National Night Out has been held since 1984 and is designed to strengthen relationships between communities and law enforcement while also heightening crime and drug prevention awareness.
Johnston County and Hoke County
The Johnston County celebration will be hosted by the Smithfield Police Department in partnerships with local fire departments, EMS, Steven Sausage and Lifespring Church. It is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Smithfiled Community Park at 600 M. Durwood Stephenson Parkway.
Hoke County’s National Night Out was moved from Aug. 4 to Tuesday, Aug. 11 because of forecasted weather. The event will be held at East Hoke Middle School at 4702 Fayetteville Road, Raeford, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Wake Forest and Durham
Wake Forest will host National Night Out on Monday, Oct. 5 in the parking lot of the Joyner Park Community Center at 701 Harris Road from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The town celebrates on the first Monday in October to take advantage of cooler temperatures.
Durham uses the same seasonal approach and schedules its observance for the first Tuesday in October. The Durham Police Department will host its event at DPD headquarters at 602 E. Main Street from 4 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
That split between Aug. 4 and later dates is the story this year: National Night Out still starts from its traditional August timing, but several North Carolina communities are choosing later dates that fit local weather and planning needs. Fayetteville is set for over 20 events on Sunday, August 16, Warren County Night to Unite is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 12, and Downtown Tarboro is also hosting the county’s observance.
