The Falcons are treating James Pearce Jr.’s situation like more than a background issue. That is usually the sign a team believes the uncertainty could become a roster problem, and in this case the uncertainty sits at a position group Atlanta had already identified as thin.
In February, Pearce was arrested, and his possible suspension remains in limbo. Since OTAs, he has been back with the team and taking reps with the second-team defense, which tells you something important about how Atlanta is handling the situation. The Falcons are not freezing him out, but they are also not building their first-unit plans around him.
Ebukam has moved into the key role
That job has gone to Samson Ebukam, who signed a one-year deal in free agency and has gotten the majority of the first-team work opposite Jalon Walker in 11-on-11s during training camp. For a team that was already worried about edge depth without Pearce, that is a meaningful shift. Atlanta did not add pass-rushers just for insurance in the abstract. It added them because the floor at the position could change quickly.
Ebukam brings a little more certainty to the rotation, and the Falcons clearly value that right now. He had previously played under Falcons DL coach Nate Ollie in 2023, which likely helps with the transition and with the staff’s comfort level. In a camp setting, that matters. When a player already knows the coaching language and the structure of the defense, he can get first-team reps without the same ramp-up period.
The bigger point is that Atlanta is planning for multiple outcomes. If Pearce avoids a suspension, the Falcons can still fold him into the mix and deepen the pass rush. If the suspension does arrive, the early camp reps suggest the team is already deciding which pieces can carry the load. That is why the first-team work opposite Walker matters so much. It is not just a camp detail. It is a clue about how the Falcons expect to survive the season if the edge room gets tested early.
Pearce’s talent is still part of the equation, but the Falcons are acting as if availability is the first question, not the last. That is often how roster uncertainty becomes a real football story.
