Caroline Savage Inquest Hears Grandmother Died While Using Mounjaro

Caroline Savage, a grandmother from Wortwell near Harleston, died in October 2024 after developing sudden and severe pain following an increase in her Mounjaro dose. An inquest at Norfolk Coroner's Court is now examining whether grandmothers died while using Mounjaro should be treated as a warning about how dose changes are assessed and how symptoms are investigated.

Mrs Savage had been privately prescribed Mounjaro for around four months before she became seriously ill. In July 2024, she visited a private London clinic, weighed 128kg and had a BMI of 46. She had been taking the drug to lose weight and to ease symptoms associated with lipoedema and lymphoedema.

The case was heard by Yvonne Blake, the area coroner. The inquest has been examining whether her death may be linked to Mounjaro, a drug known to have gastrointestinal side effects.

That question follows a specific chain of events: Mrs Savage was discharged from hospital hours before she collapsed and died at home. The timing puts the focus on what happened between the dose increase, her sudden pain, and the decision to send her home.

Jeremy Savage said he was concerned that doctors in hospital may have been too quick to attribute her symptoms to Mounjaro. His concern was that the medication may have been treated as the explanation before a fuller investigation into her collapse had been completed.

For families dealing with a death after a prescription change, the practical issue is not the drug name itself but the sequence. A dose increase, sudden pain, hospital discharge and a collapse at home created the timeline the inquest is now testing against the medical evidence.

The next step is for the inquest to decide what caused or contributed to her death and whether Mounjaro played a part. The answer will shape how Mrs Savage's death is recorded and how closely the drug's side effects are weighed in cases like hers.
