Costa Rica and the United States will meet Friday in the first 2026 Concacaf U-20 Men’s Championship Semifinal at Estadio Banorte in Mexico City, Mexico, with a place in the Final now on the line.
The stakes are straightforward: both teams have already secured qualification to the 2027 FIFA Men’s U-20 World Cup by reaching the Semifinals. So while the World Cup ticket is already punched, the next step is a chance to keep moving toward the championship match.
How Costa Rica got here

The United States reached the Semifinals with a 3-1 win over Guatemala, remaining unbeaten in the tournament. The United States were also the 2024 U-20 Championship runners-up, which adds some context to this semifinal run.
Like Costa Rica, the United States already accomplished the immediate goal of qualifying for the 2027 FIFA Men’s U-20 World Cup. That changes the tone of the semifinal slightly: it is no longer about survival, but about chasing the Final and improving on what has already been a successful tournament path.
What Friday means
This matchup brings together two teams that handled their quarterfinals differently but arrived at the same place. Costa Rica needed penalties after a hard-fought contest with Haiti, while the United States advanced in more direct fashion against Guatemala.
