The New England Patriots signed running back Hassan Haskins and waived-injured rookie running back Myles Montgomery, the latest change to their backfield as they continue sorting out the roster.
Haskins is 26 years old and brings 44 regular season games of NFL experience. The 6-foot-2, 228-pound back was a fourth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft by the Tennessee Titans, and his career has already included time with the Titans and the L.A. Chargers.
What Haskins brings
Haskins has appeared in one start across his NFL career. He has 76 rushing attempts for 229 yards and two touchdowns, along with 18 receptions for 199 yards and one receiving touchdown. He has also handled 28 kickoff returns for 646 yards, which gives New England another player with some special teams experience in addition to backfield depth.
Last season with the L.A. Chargers, Haskins played in 12 games. He logged 17 rushing attempts for 47 yards, added four receptions for 13 yards and returned eight kickoffs for 197 yards. That usage suggests a player who can contribute in multiple areas, even if his offensive role has been limited at times.
What changed for Montgomery
The corresponding move ends the immediate availability of Myles Montgomery, who was signed by the Patriots as a rookie free agent out of UCF on May 8, 2026. Montgomery is 23 years old, stands 5-foot-10 and weighs 205 pounds. He spent three seasons at Cincinnati from 2021-2023 before playing two seasons at UCF from 2024-2025.
Montgomery entered the roster as a young depth addition, but the waived-injured designation means New England will move forward without him for now. For the Patriots, the transaction is a straightforward one: add a more experienced running back and adjust the depth chart accordingly.
Haskins’ path back to New England also adds some context to the move. The Tennessee Titans released him at the end of training camp in 2024, and the L.A. Chargers later acquired him off waivers. Now he gets another chance with the Patriots as they continue building out the backfield.
