Everton are lining up a move for Ben White if Arsenal complete a deal for Aston Villa defender Konsa, with David Moyes looking to strengthen the right side of defence.
That would make White one of the more intriguing names in the market. He is an England international, he can play on the right side of the back line and he also offers cover centrally, which is exactly the kind of flexibility Everton need.
The move would also come with a clear risk. White has missed games through injury during the last five seasons, and that record is likely to be part of any internal discussion before Everton go any further.
Why Everton want Ben White
Everton have already been active this summer, signing Brennan Johnson, Merlin Rohl, Tyrique George, Hayden Hackney and Christian Norgaard. Even so, the right side of defence remains an area Moyes is trying to improve.
White fits that brief. He is reliable when fit, experienced at a high level and able to fill more than one role. For a side looking to tighten up without losing balance, that matters.
Mikel Arteta has also spoken positively about White, saying he was very happy that the defender was back in the best version of himself. Arteta said White is “a really talented player” and “a fighter”, adding that he trains “like he’s playing the Champions League final.”
He also said: “I’m very happy that we have Ben White back in the best version of himself. His attitude has been so positive, so good. When given the opportunity, you take it.”
The Arsenal domino that could change the picture
The key question is whether Arsenal move for Konsa. If that deal happens, White could become more available, which is why Everton are monitoring the situation closely.
That is the sort of transfer chain that can move quickly once one club takes the next step. Arsenal would be reshaping their defensive options, while Everton would be ready to act on a player who could immediately raise the level of their squad.
For now, it remains a move in waiting rather than one close to completion. But if Arsenal complete their business for Konsa, Everton may feel the door has opened for a defender who would suit Moyes' plans.
