Princess Eugenie baby name was revealed on Monday, when she announced that her daughter is Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank. The public naming follows the earlier birth announcement and gives the baby’s place in the family line a sharper edge: Prince Edward has moved to 16th in line to the throne.
Eugenie said the child was “named after three people we love and admire past and present,” and added that the choice includes a tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, “who we hold close in our hearts”. She also wrote, “Her name is part of English and Portuguese history, two places we love and call home.”
Adelaide and Queen Elizabeth II
The first name points back to Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen, who was Queen of the United Kingdom and of Hanover from 1830 to 1837 as the wife of King William IV. That makes the name choice more than decorative; it ties the child to a specific royal line already familiar to anyone reading the family history closely. Eugenie’s note about Queen Elizabeth II does the same work in a more direct way, turning the name into a public remembrance rather than a private one.
The strongest part of the announcement is its plainness. Eugenie did not dress the naming up as ceremony; she framed it as a family decision built around people “we love and admire past and present.” In royal terms, that is a small sentence with a lot of load-bearing weight, because it links the baby’s personal identity to both memory and inheritance.
Lisbon, Portugal and the line
The baby girl was born on 3 August at a hospital in Lisbon, Portugal, and Eugenie had already announced the birth earlier in August with the post, “Jack and I are so excited to announce Baby Girl Brooksbank!!” The new name now closes the loop on the birth notice and turns a brief family update into a formal public record.
Adelaide is the 15th great-grandchild of Queen Elizabeth II and the fifth grandchild of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah Ferguson. She is also the third child for Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank, after August Philip Hawke Brooksbank, born in London in 2021, and Ernest George Ronnie Brooksbank, born in 2023. Eugenie said August Philip Hawke Brooksbank and Ernest George Ronnie Brooksbank are already the “best big brothers”.
Annina leaves one gap
The only part of the name that does not yet carry a public explanation is Annina. It has not been confirmed who that name refers to, so the tribute line reaches three names but only two are publicly legible: Adelaide for royal history, Elizabeth for Queen Elizabeth II, and Annina left to family inference.
Eugenie also said the two weeks since Adelaide was born had been “the most special, cosy and love-filled time”. That is the real takeaway here: a private family milestone has been turned into a structured public statement, and the part still worth watching is the one name that has not yet been explained.
