Michael Urie was part of the Shrinking cast break that cut into Season 4 filming while the show’s Emmy-nominated third season was still in focus. The timing says plenty: Apple TV’s comedy is already moving forward on new episodes even as Season 3’s awards run keeps the cast in the conversation.
Season 3's 10 Emmy nominations
10 Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Comedy Series, gave Season 3 a level of recognition that keeps the series in awards season even as production moves on. For a show built around Jimmy’s grief, that tally gives the next season a stronger platform before a single new episode reaches viewers.
Jason Segel stars as Jimmy and works as executive producer and writer with Bill Lawrence and Brett Goldstein. He also made the show’s next turn sound less like a reset than a controlled shift: “We knew that we wanted to get out of the acute stage of grief as a show because it will run out of steam eventually,” and “So we had a lot of talks about what another cycle could look like.”
Michael Urie and the cast break
Michael Urie plays Jimmy’s best friend and lawyer Brian, which matters here because the cast discussion happened while Season 4 was already shooting. That puts Brian inside a production that is not waiting for awards season to finish before deciding where the story goes next.
Harrison Ford, who plays Paul, framed the show’s central relationship as a balancing act, saying, “I think the relationship is complicated,” and “This big guy and this old man are kind of a usual combination.” Jessica Williams, who plays Gaby, added a more practical view of the set rhythm: “There’s nothing really you can give him that he’s not going to show up and be excited about and ready to do.”
Jimmy, Paul, and grief
Jason Segel’s clearest line of direction is also the sharpest business reality for the series: “What was interesting to me is what does it look like when you then decide, ‘OK, I’m ready to take it for a spin now. I’ve reached the end of the acute stage. I’m going to walk out this front door and try to have a good day.’” He followed that with, “Sounds great, but it turns out it’s its own set of clumsiness and hilarity, and it almost feels like a bit of a rom-com to me, to try again at 45 years old.”
That gives Season 4 a clearer lane than a simple continuation of Jimmy’s grief-stricken story. Jeff Daniels appeared as Jimmy’s father in Season 3, and Segel said Daniels’ arrival made Jimmy’s obsession with Paul make sense, but the next phase is about what happens after acute grief stops being the engine. Season 4 is already in production, and the open question is how much Brian’s role grows as the show changes shape around Jimmy’s attempt to move on.
