Hull KR head coach Willie Peters has made it clear that Tuesday night’s rearranged Round 2 meeting with Warrington Wolves is about far more than simply getting another game out of the way. With the Betfred Super League season moving into the business end, Peters said the contest is a significant one for ladder positioning and play-off places.
A win would move the current champions into third place and keep them on track for a home Play-Off game. Peters said that was the kind of opportunity his side has to take control of itself, rather than wait on other results to shape the top four.
Why the game matters
Peters described the match as “very important” and said that when the fixture was first rearranged for a Tuesday, it was easy to underestimate how much it could matter later in the season. Now, with Round 24 approaching and only a handful of matches left, the stakes are obvious.
“Ladder positioning is really important,” Peters said. “You want a home game. If you don't get one, you don't get one. You don't deserve it.” He added that Hull KR are in a position where they can still secure a home Play-Off game and make the top four, but only if they keep taking care of business themselves.
That is why the meeting with Warrington Wolves is so important. Peters stressed that Hull KR are not relying on other teams for third or fourth place. In his view, a win on Tuesday would put the Robins into third outright, which would strengthen their path toward the play-offs and possible home advantage.
Returning players give Hull KR a boost
Hull KR also head into the game with some important personnel returning. Mikey Lewis is back after serving a four-match suspension, while Tyrone May came through a minor knee issue to be included for the contest.
Peters said Lewis has had a lot to learn over the last four weeks and wants to see him return with more calmness and composure. He added that Lewis does not need to feel as if he has to do something on every play or become frustrated when things are not going his way.
That message fits the wider picture for Hull KR. Peters felt it was important that the team still won four consecutive victories while Lewis was out, and he also said the side is better with him in it. The next step, Peters said, is for Lewis to keep showing that level at the back end of the year.
With four games in 14 days ahead, Peters did not try to play down the challenge. Instead, he framed Hull KR vs Wolves as one of the defining games of this stretch, with table position, home-field advantage and play-off momentum all on the line.
