Charlie Hunnam Drives Sons Of Anarchy Reunion in Legends

FX has ordered Legends, and Charlie Hunnam is using Sons of Anarchy as the engine. The meta-thriller brings seven cast members back together as themselves at a fan convention, more than a decade after the FX series ended in 2014.

Hunnam’s three-year push

At least three years in development at FX, the project now moves from idea to series with Hunnam as creator, executive producer and star. Jonathan Groff is set as showrunner, while Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates and Theo Rossi join him on screen.

Nick Grad said, “When Charlie brought us this inspired idea, we instantly sparked to his bold and entertaining vision,” The FX Entertainment President added, “Charlie’s talents are on full display as a writer, performer and executive producer, leading the real-life brotherhood on an adventure that is both a love letter to the series and a fun meta twist on what fans think they know.”

FX keeps the reunion in-house

Legends is produced by FX Productions and 20th Television, and it will be available on FX and Hulu. That keeps the reunion tied to the same corporate home that carried Sons of Anarchy through 7 seasons before it concluded in 2014.

Hunnam’s timing helps the pitch. He just earned his first Emmy nomination for Monster: The Ed Gein Story, which gives FX a fresh awards-season talking point around a project that is both nostalgic and current.

Sutter’s absence matters

Kurt Sutter created Sons of Anarchy, but he is not credited as being involved in Legends. That leaves the reunion built around Hunnam’s authorship rather than the original creator’s voice, even as the series leans on the same ensemble chemistry that made the earlier show a durable FX asset.

The setup is straightforward enough: the cast will play themselves, and the story turns on a real-world threat that is more dangerous than anything they faced on their show. FX has not added any other casting yet, so the immediate takeaway is that the franchise is back in motion with Hunnam in charge, and the next reveal will show how far the reunion extends beyond the original seven.
