Deion Sanders Civil Papers: attempted service at CU Boulder came during open practice

Deion Sanders became the focus of an awkward off-field moment on Aug. 11 when a Boulder County Sheriff’s Office deputy tried to serve him civil papers on the University of Colorado Boulder campus, only for Sanders to be unavailable.

The timing mattered. The attempted service came at 10:22 a.m. while members of the media and 300 fans were watching an open practice at Franklin Field, and it arrived just as Sanders was being subpoenaed to testify in a case tied to his son, Shilo Sanders.

What happened on Aug. 11?

According to Boulder County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Carrie Haverfield, the office coordinated with university staff in an effort to find a time for service. She said the deputy was then contacted by Mr. Sanders’ legal counsel, who indicated the documents could be accepted on his behalf.

That detail helps explain why the service attempt did not lead to a public confrontation on the field. Sanders was not available when the deputy arrived, and the matter was handled through legal channels rather than in front of the crowd at CU.

Why the subpoena matters

The civil papers are connected to Shilo Sanders’ bankruptcy trial. In 2023, Shilo Sanders filed for bankruptcy with more than $11 million in debt, and the trial is scheduled to begin in Denver on Aug. 31.

On Friday, Michael E. Romero discussed Deion Sanders being called to testify during a pretrial hearing. Romero said, “I noticed Deion was subpoenaed,” and added, “I’m just recognizing that is a potential issue,”

For CU law professor Jennifer Hendricks, the schedule suggests Sanders’ appearance would likely be accommodated. Paul Campos said Sanders’ lawyers would likely negotiate exactly what day he would show up in court.

A busy week for Sanders and CU

The timing is striking because the legal case overlaps with the start of the football season. The CU Buffs are scheduled to play at Georgia Tech on Sept. 3 to open the season, which comes just days after Shilo Sanders’ bankruptcy trial begins.

For Deion Sanders, that creates a narrow window between the demands of a major legal matter and the start of the college football season. The result is a reminder that even during an open practice and a routine campus day, the off-field pressure around CU can quickly become part of the story.
