Southampton have rejected Aston Villa's £18million offer plus add-ons for Taylor Harwood-Bellis, underlining how highly they still value the 24-year-old centre-back. With Ezri Konsa expected to move to Arsenal, Villa are clearly chasing defensive cover, but Southampton have made it plain that Harwood-Bellis is not for sale on the cheap.
The move comes after Benfica also had an opening bid of €20million turned down last weekend, so this is now a second firm response from Southampton in quick succession. For a player who was brought in by the club in 2024 after they triggered an obligation to sign him from Manchester City, the message is simple: he remains central to what Southampton are trying to build.
Why Southampton are resisting
Harwood-Bellis is not a fringe player in this squad. Last term he made 48 appearances in all competitions, including 41 of Southampton's 46 Championship games and both legs of the play-off semi-finals, and he has already played twice for the club this season.
That level of involvement explains the reluctance to let him go, especially with the season still so young. He played the full 90 minutes in Southampton's 2-0 League Cup win over Colchester United on August 8, then completed another full match in the 2-2 draw with Watford on August 16. Those are the kind of details that show a manager is still leaning heavily on him.
Villa's search for a defender
Villa's interest makes sense from their side. If Konsa does leave for Arsenal, they need a ready-made central defender, and Harwood-Bellis is the sort of profile that fits a club trying to stay competitive across the Premier League.
He is also a player with international recognition. Harwood-Bellis made his England debut against the Republic of Ireland in November 2024 and scored, which only adds to his standing after a strong spell of consistency at club level. Southampton know that a defender with that background and that workload will attract attention.
For now, though, they have drawn a line through both bids. The next question is whether Villa return with a stronger offer, or whether Southampton's stance forces them to look elsewhere before Sunday's Premier League opener away to Brighton & Hove Albion. Southampton, meanwhile, are back in action against Stoke City on August 22, with Harwood-Bellis still expected to be a key figure.
