Thomas Partey’s move to Al Shabab is the sort of transfer that lands with more than one meaning at once. Al Shabab announced the signing on social media on Friday, confirming that the 33-year-old has joined after being without a club since leaving Villarreal at the end of last season. That club situation matters. Partey was not arriving from a settled spell or a carefully planned move, but from a period of uncertainty after his exit from Spain.
A transfer with football and legal context
The football argument is straightforward enough: Al Shabab have taken a midfielder with a long top-level résumé, including time at Arsenal, Atletico Madrid and Villarreal. The club’s current mix gives the deal a familiar Saudi Pro League shape, with the league continuing to attract players who still have name value and established careers behind them.

Partey was charged in the UK in July 2025 with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, and he pleaded not guilty in September 2025. He was also charged with two new counts of rape in February this year and pleaded not guilty to those charges in April this year. His return to north London to face Tottenham Hotspur in September 2025 was another reminder that the case has remained active in the public conversation.
That is why the signing will be read differently from a routine late-summer move. Villarreal’s signing of Partey had already drawn criticism in Spain, the UK and elsewhere, and Al Shabab now inherit the same scrutiny. Jenny Wiltshire, speaking on behalf of Partey, said the move gave him “the opportunity to finally clear his name,” which underlines the fact that the football decision sits inside a much larger and more sensitive story.
For Al Shabab, the immediate question is how Partey fits on the field. For everyone else, the broader question is what kind of calculation this move represents while the case is still unresolved. In the Saudi Pro League, clubs have often chased proven quality and global recognition.
