The Saskatchewan Roughriders got a timely boost for Roughriders Vs Lions on Sunday, with Samuel Emilus and James Letcher Jr. both back in the lineup against the B.C. Lions at BC Place Stadium.
Emilus returned after missing the team’s last three regular-season games with a foot injury, while Letcher Jr. came back after going down with an elbow injury in Week 4. For a Riders side that had just suffered a 26-19 upset loss, the timing of those returns matters.
Emilus brings proven production back into the attack
Even with the missed time, Emilus still remained the Roughriders’ third-leading receiver. In six regular-season games, he had already caught 31 passes for 448 yards and five touchdowns, underlining how important he has become to the offence.
That production also fits into a bigger body of work. Emilus was originally a first-round pick in the CFL Draft in 2022, earned West Division all-star status in 2024, and was named the Most Valuable Canadian in Saskatchewan’s Grey Cup win last season.
For Saskatchewan, this is not simply about getting a familiar name back into the lineup. It is about restoring one of the players the team trusts most when the game tightens up and the ball has to go to a receiver who can deliver.
Letcher Jr. adds another layer to the return game
Letcher Jr. was also a valuable return option before his injury. Over his previous three games, he averaged 13.9 yards per punt return and 24.3 yards per kickoff return, while also scoring two career return touchdowns.
That sort of field-position impact can change the tone of a game quickly, especially against a Lions side coming in off a 30-26 win. In a matchup like this, hidden yards matter almost as much as the headline plays.
The Roughriders also had another reason to welcome back their regular contributors after last week’s attack lacked sharpness. Star Thomas rushed nine times for 36 yards and caught three passes for 25 yards, so the return of Emilus and Letcher Jr. offers Saskatchewan a better chance to stretch the field and get more explosive plays into the offence.
A response after a setback
Saskatchewan entered the game at 4-5, while B.C. was 6-3, so the standings already suggested a difficult test in Vancouver. But the Roughriders have at least regained two players who can alter the picture quickly.
Emilus gives them a proven target. Letcher Jr. gives them a threat in the return game. Put together, those are the kind of returns that can help a team reset after a disappointing result and give its offence a better chance to find rhythm again.
The next question is whether those changes are enough to swing momentum back the Roughriders’ way at BC Place Stadium, or whether the Lions will use their home form to keep control of the evening.
