King Harald V of Norway's health has worsened while he remains in hospital at Oslo University Hospital, Rikshospitalet, receiving antibiotics for a bacterial infection in his bloodstream. Crown Prince Haakon is serving as regent while Harald is on leave from royal duties.
The palace said the 89-year-old monarch has responded to treatment despite the deterioration in his condition. Harald has been on the throne since 1991, and he was admitted to hospital and put on sick leave a week ago.

The current stay at Oslo University Hospital keeps the regency arrangement in place and leaves Crown Prince Haakon handling duties for the Norwegian royal household. The latest update matters because it turns a short hospital admission into an open-ended absence from public work, with no return date set in the palace statement.
Harald's health problems this year have not begun with this infection. In recent weeks, he was treated with cortisone for haemolytic anaemia, a rare blood condition that reduces red blood cells and can cause fatigue and shortness of breath.
Norway Royal Duties
April 2024 brought an earlier shift when the Norwegian royal household said Harald would make a "permanent reduction" to his public engagements "out of consideration for his age". That move already reduced the king's public schedule; the latest deterioration extends that period of limited duties rather than replacing it with a new arrangement.
The same year, Harald was fitted with a pacemaker after falling ill on holiday in Malaysia. Those episodes now sit alongside the bloodstream infection as the reasons the crown prince has remained in charge of day-to-day royal duties in Norway.
