Josh Sweat still not activated from PUP by Aug. 22 — Trey Benson and the Cardinals have a timing problem

The Arizona Cardinals can dress it up however they like, but the reality is not hard to see: Josh Sweat is still not out there, and the clock is getting louder. That is the uncomfortable truth for a team that signed him after he left the Philadelphia Eagles and expected him to be a major difference-maker, not a mystery that drags into late August.

Mike LaFleur’s update on Saturday night was positive enough on the surface. Asked about a possible activation, he said, “This coming week? Josh is doing good.” Fine. Encouraging, even. But “doing good” is not the same as being back on the field, and it is certainly not the same as being ready for the kind of physical rhythm a pass rusher needs before the games start counting for real.

The problem for Arizona is that the calendar is not negotiating. Sunday, Aug. 30 is cut-down day, when NFL clubs must reduce their rosters to 53 players. Then comes the season opener at the Los Angeles Chargers on Sept. 13. That leaves very little room for a player who last practiced with the Cardinals at the end of last season, missed all on-field work during OTAs and minicamp, and was then placed on the PUP list during training camp because of a minor knee issue.

A delay that matters more than the scoreline

The Cardinals lost 34-13 to the Dallas Cowboys at State Farm Stadium on Saturday night, but the bigger issue is not the result. It is the fact that their most impactful defensive player is still waiting to get fully rolling while everyone else is racing toward September.

LaFleur made the point that edge rushers are different from quarterbacks, because they need live reps and real contact to find their timing. He is right about that. There is no substitute for being in a stance on third down and fighting to win huge. You can talk about conditioning and individual work all you want, but football shape is a very specific thing, and it does not arrive by accident.

That is why this situation feels so awkward. Josh Sweat and the Arizona Cardinals are not dealing with a season-ending crisis, but they are dealing with a shrinking runway. Every day he remains on the PUP list is another day lost from the kind of preparation that actually matters when the games begin to count.

Maybe this ends up being a brief pause and a temporary inconvenience. Maybe Sweat gets back, gets moving and looks exactly like the player Arizona paid for. But right now, the only honest verdict is that the Cardinals have a key defensive piece with limited time to prove his body is ready, and that is not the sort of uncertainty any team wants this close to cut-down day.
