Anthropic opened a research preview of the Model Hardware Standard for AI agent use. The first group includes scientific research labs and advanced manufacturers. The standard is built to reduce hardware integration from weeks or months to hours or minutes.
The Model Hardware Standard is a shared specification for AI agents to safely operate physical devices. It also lets agents handle multiple lab and manufacturing instruments in parallel. For teams running equipment, that can mean faster setup and less custom wiring between software and hardware.
Anthropic and HHMI Janelia Research Campus
The development of MHS began as a collaboration between Anthropic and HHMI Janelia Research Campus. MHS works with any device that has a programmable interface. It is also model-agnostic, so the standard does not depend on one AI system.
The driver layer is where the system becomes practical. The MHS driver translates between a computer's operating system and a hardware device using primitives such as read and write. It makes each device discoverable in a standard format, can add tags for natural-language hardware information, and can automatically produce a reference file with a device's general characteristics.
MHS and round-the-clock experiments
Anthropic says agents using MHS can reason through each step in an experiment and update parameters in real time. In some cases, they can recover from hardware errors without intervention. That opens the door to autonomous, round-the-clock experiments and workflows instead of brittle one-off setups.
The preview matters because most devices do not communicate with each other, and there was no standardized way to integrate them or let them share data with an AI agent safely before MHS. The practical test now is whether the previewed standard really cuts integration work to hours or minutes in live lab and factory settings.
Anthropic said it will collaborate on safety evaluations and best practices before making the standard open source. The remaining question is which safety checks will set the bar for that release.
