Emiliano Martinez has joined Chelsea from Aston Villa on Sunday, bringing the latest chapter in a surprisingly busy transfer relationship between the two Premier League clubs. The move is the eighth deal between Chelsea and Aston Villa in the past four years, underlining just how often business has been done since BlueCo took control of Chelsea in 2022.
The numbers are striking. Since 2022, Chelsea and Villa have repeatedly dealt with each other across permanent transfers and loan moves, with the sums involved already stretching into six figures in millions. There is no suggestion that either club has broken any rules, but the volume of activity has clearly drawn attention from executives elsewhere in the Premier League.
Unai Emery’s reaction to the situation captured the unusual mood around the two clubs. Asked about the relationship, he replied: “Good relations?”
He then added: “They want to kill us and we want to kill them!”
That was not a serious reflection on any wider issue, but it did make the point that these are two ambitious clubs with little sentiment when it comes to recruitment. As Emery also said: “We have good players and we can sign one player off them, it's not a good relationship - it's a deal for money and a deal for players.”

Martinez’s switch on Sunday now adds another high-profile name to the list.

This is more than a one-off exchange. It suggests a relationship built on value, timing and opportunity, even if it looks unusual from the outside. Chelsea and Villa have clearly been willing to trade within the same market, and both clubs have found reasons to keep doing business.
Emery summed up the competitive edge in his own way when he said: “I am happy for Emiliano Martinez and Morgan Rogers and I know I am not happy for Chelsea.”
