Detroit Public Schools Community District is making school closures earlier by three hours on Tuesday, Sept. 1, and Wednesday, Sept. 2, as expected heat builds across Detroit and Southeast Michigan. Students and school-based staff are covered by the change, while employees at Central Office are not.
The district said the shortened schedule applies both days because temperatures in Southeast Michigan are expected to reach near 90 degrees Tuesday and the lower 90s Wednesday. High humidity could push heat index values toward 100 degrees, and the district encouraged families and staff to plan accordingly.

Brandon Carr, a digital content producer for ClickOnDetroit, reported the announcement made Monday, Aug. 31. The timing gives families one full school day to adjust before the first early dismissal on Tuesday.
Afternoon Career Technical Education classes will be canceled on both days. That means students who normally stay for those classes will leave on the early schedule instead of returning later in the day.

Individual schools will decide whether after-school activities, athletics, and other extracurricular programs continue on Tuesday and Wednesday. The district’s districtwide notice does not settle that part of the day for every campus, so families will need to check with each school before planning rides, practices, or pickup times.
The district’s Central Office is staying on its normal schedule, which leaves the early dismissal aimed at students and school-based staff rather than every employee in the system. For families, the practical change is simple: both school days end three hours sooner, and the rest of the afternoon depends on each school’s own decision.
