Manchester City have agreed a £125m deal to sign Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea, bringing an end to the summer’s longest-running transfer saga and giving Enzo Maresca the reunion he wanted with his former skipper.
The move was completed after City pushed through a 79-day transfer window that brought plenty of disruption and numerous obstacles. For Maresca, it also delivers the captain he said on Friday he hoped to add before the window closed.
Fernandez first moved to Chelsea from Benfica for £107m in 2023, and this latest transfer creates another striking entry in a career that has already crossed football’s biggest spending thresholds. The £125m fee is a joint-British transfer record, and Fernandez becomes the first player in football history to move for more than £100m twice.
Why Maresca wanted the deal
Maresca has been clear about the value of familiarity as he settles into life at Manchester City after being appointed in June as Pep Guardiola’s replacement. He worked with Fernandez at Chelsea and previously coached Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall at Leicester during their Championship-winning campaign, so the City manager has shown a preference for players he already knows and trusts.
That approach matters even more after City lost the experience of Bernardo Silva, John Stones and Rodri this summer. With back-to-back Premier League wins to open the season, City still look well placed, but adding a player of Fernandez’s profile gives Maresca another proven option in the middle of the team and, in his words, helps reduce “disruption.”
There is also a symbolic edge to the deal. City have spent much of the summer trying to solve a difficult set of issues, and landing Fernandez gives Maresca the captaincy presence he has been looking for while reinforcing the idea that he wants to shape the squad around players who can settle quickly.
For Chelsea, the sale brings another major chapter in Fernandez’s career full circle. For City, it is a statement move that matches the scale of the fee and underlines how determined they were to close the deal before the window ended.
