Emmys 2026 opened Saturday at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, and Night 1 started handing out trophies across 49 categories. The first batch leaned hard into unscripted work, putting documentaries, reality and game shows, variety specials, and short form series at the front of the awards run.
49 categories is a wide enough block to shape the week’s reporting on its own, and the split-night setup means the early results will be repackaged before they reach the wider audience. The first night also included Best Variety Series Writing, a reminder that the Creative Arts segment is not a side show so much as the industry’s technical and format-heavy ledger.
Juried wins and early names
Aug. 12 brought the juried winners, chosen by a panel of professionals rather than the full membership. Among them, The Masked Singer and The Traitors shared Best Costumes for Variety, Nonfiction or Reality Programming, while Crafting Crimes took Best Innovation in Emerging Media Programming. That early round gave the unscripted field a head start before the bigger Night 1 slate began to fill in.
Celebrity Family Feud was listed as the winner in Best Game Show, and that result lands in a category where recognition is as much about format durability as it is about a single episode. Night 1 also pulled in contenders such as Saturday Night Live, The Oscars, and The Apple Music Super Bowl LX Halftime Show Starring Bad Bunny, with RuPaul's Drag Race and The Late Show With Stephen Colbert close behind in the field.
Desi Lydic and the field
Desi Lydic’s name showed up in the Night 1 conversation through The Daily Show: Desi Lydic Foxsplains, which is exactly the kind of short-form lane this first night favors. The same category cluster also included SubwayTakes With Kareem Rahma, which keeps the focus on compact, platform-friendly formats rather than the main primetime awards that come later.
The Traitors arrived with six nominations this year, a useful marker for how much weight the unscripted side still carries. That comes after SNL50: The Anniversary Special won seven trophies last year in the unscripted ceremony, the clearest sign that this part of the Emmys can swing hard toward a single title when voters or juries settle on a favorite run.
FXX and the edited broadcast
Five races were moved off the Sept. 14 primetime telecast on NBC, and Nights 1 and 2 were not scheduled to air live. Instead, the TV Academy said the two nights will be edited into a single broadcast, the 78th Emmy Awards (Creative Arts), set for Sept. 12 on FXX at 8 p.m. ET/PT and streaming on Hulu the next day.
That arrangement leaves viewers with a delayed version of the ceremony even as the Night 1 winners list updates in real time, so the practical question is not when the awards are happening but which results will survive the edit intact. For now, the cleanest read is that Emmys 2026 is using Night 1 to clear a large unscripted slate fast, then compressing the most marketable parts into one packaged broadcast later.
