Hawkins said the vessel neither collected sensitive data nor carried any classified sonar or radar equipment, a description that narrows the value of the drone to routine surveillance rather than sensitive intelligence work.
The US military said operations in the area waters continue. That keeps the incident inside a larger cycle already moving through the Strait of Hormuz, where control of small craft and undersea systems has become part of the wider contest between Iran and the US.
IRGC claims seizure at dawn
Iranian state TV said the IRGC described the seizure as a complex intelligence and operational action at dawn. The IRGC said its naval forces seized the vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, setting up the direct contradiction with the US account that the drone had malfunctioned well before the Iranian announcement.
The timing matters because the claim lands after a month of relative calm in August, when Iran and the US resumed exchanges of fire. On Tuesday, the US military said it destroyed multiple Iranian tankers after Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps twice attempted to strike a US navy warship with ballistic missiles.
Marco Rubio in Colombia
Marco Rubio said, "Iran continues to try to hit US naval ships." He added, "And for every time they do that or try to do that, they’re going to lose tankers." Rubio also said, "And I think you’ll see that again today," while speaking to reporters on a trip to Colombia.
The practical question now is not whether the drone was taken, but what the malfunction means for the value of any recovery Iran claims. Hawkins' account says the aircraft was already disabled and unclassified, while Iran's version presents the episode as an operational seizure in a passage that remains open to US and Iran military activity.
