Tennent’s has launched Tennent’s Stout, a 4.0% ABV beer now available to order from Tennent’s Direct. Hazel Alexander said the new stout is being rolled out across on-trade venues from this month.
Hazel Alexander on Tennent’s Stout
Alexander, senior brand manager for Tennent’s Lager, said the company created its own stout “for people on home soil to enjoy.” She added that the final product “has performed excellently in consumer testing.”
She also said: “Demand for darker beers remains high with consumers more open to trying different stouts.” Tennent’s said the stout category grew 22.6% in volume in Scotland in the last two years, and that Tennent’s Stout is a rich dark beer with a rich roasted character and hints of chocolate, liquorice, treacle and coffee.
Wellpark Brewery heritage
Tennent’s said the launch is a revival of its stout roots. The first batch of stout at Wellpark Brewery was brewed in 1740, and the company said it exported rich, robust stouts across the globe throughout the 18th and 19th centuries.
The company said Tennent’s is still best known for lager, but stout was the cornerstone of its craft. It also still brews Export Stout for markets overseas, while recent additions to the range include Tennent’s Tops, Tennent’s Bavarian Pilsner, Tennent’s Zero and Tennent’s Light.
Tennent's Direct orders
For consumers, the practical change is immediate: Tennent’s Stout can be ordered now through Tennent’s Direct, while on-trade venues will start receiving it from this month. Tennent’s said the beer can be poured in one or two parts without affecting the taste or appearance, and that it has a moderate bitterness and a smooth, creamy finish.
That leaves one detail open for venues and drinkers: Tennent’s has not said which on-trade venues will receive Tennent’s Stout first, so the rollout will depend on where the company places the first deliveries.
