Nick Emmanwori was listed as questionable for the Seattle Seahawks' season opener against the Patriots after being limited in practice all week following ankle surgery. The update leaves Seattle with a thin safety group entering Week 1, with Ty Okada ruled out and only three safeties on the 53-man roster.
That depth issue is the main reason Emmanwori's status matters. The Seahawks have a few practice squad safety options available if needed, but the active roster situation already puts pressure on the players who are available on Sunday.
How Emmanwori got here
Before training camp began, Emmanwori had ankle surgery, and his workload stayed limited throughout the week leading into the opener. On Monday, Mike Macdonald said Emmanwori was able to do more in practice than he had previously, which at least pointed in a better direction.
Macdonald also said, "Everybody that's practiced with us and been here throughout camp, we're excited with where they're at, we feel like they could contribute to us playing great football," a comment that fits the broader message around Seattle's available depth entering the game.
What it means for Seattle
For now, the clearest answer is that Emmanwori is not a sure thing for Week 1. He was not ruled out, but questionable is still a meaningful label for a player returning from surgery in a position group where the Seahawks cannot afford many absences.
If Emmanwori is active, Seattle gets an important piece back in a short-handed secondary. If he is not, the Seahawks will need to lean on their other available safeties and potentially elevate help from the practice squad to get through the opener.
