Donald Trump said Trump offers $5000 to every adult American if Republicans win the midterms, turning a campaign promise into a direct test of whether Congress would ever let it happen. He made the claim during a nearly two-hour speech at the Republican midterm convention in Dallas and urged voters to pretend that he is on the ballot.
Trump told the crowd, “If the Republicans win, you win with us, and you get $5,000.” He also said, “pretend that I’m on the ballot,” linking the payment to the midterm elections and to Republican control of the House and Senate.
Dallas convention promise
The speech came at the Republican midterm convention in Dallas, where Trump said his second term had been the most successful two years, financially and every other way, in the history of the presidency. He also said, “There is a crazy little sick cloud over our country” and “We will defeat communism in America.”
The setting mattered because the promise was made in front of Republicans who are trying to hold seats in competitive races. Susan Collins was among several Republicans facing tough races who chose not to attend the convention in Dallas.
JD Vance adds limits
After Trump spoke, JD Vance suggested the dividend payments would not go to the wealthy and could be paid for by US tariff revenues. That left the payment described in two different ways: Trump’s broad promise to every adult American, and Vance’s narrower version that appeared to exclude some people.
The White House had not released details on the announcement. Congress would need to approve or otherwise acquiesce to the payment, and the sum would far exceed US tariff revenues even before the Supreme Court tossed much of the president’s tariff program last year.
Fetterman, McCormick, and races
John Fetterman made a surprise virtual appearance at the Republican midterm convention and delivered a video address supporting Dave McCormick. He said he would always reject “extremes and socialism.”
The clash between a promised cash payment and the need for congressional approval leaves the offer as a political commitment, not a settled policy. Whether the $5,000 would go to all adult Americans or only to some Americans is the unresolved point that now sits in front of Republicans heading into the midterm elections.
