The appointment comes at a time when Olympiacos are already operating in the middle of the campaign rather than preparing for it. They have league, cup and Champions League qualifying duties underway, which makes the lack of a long settling-in period especially important for Alguacil.
Little time for a reset
Olympiacos moved training on Thursday afternoon so Alguacil could meet the players and begin work right away. That detail says a lot about the urgency of the handover. This is not a situation where a new manager has weeks to assess the squad, test ideas and slowly build toward the first competitive fixture.
Instead, Alguacil is stepping in with only one meaningful training window before his first match, which is expected to come on Saturday against OFI. In practical terms, that means the focus will be on getting basic organisation in place quickly and learning as much as possible about the squad in a short space of time.
Midseason challenge
The context matters because Olympiacos are not changing direction at the start of a preseason. They are trying to keep momentum across three competitions while adjusting to a new manager. That is a difficult assignment even for a club with experience and depth.
At the same time, the squad already contains several players who can help the transition in different areas of the pitch. In midfield, Santiago Hezze, Christos Mouzakitis, Gustavo Puerta, Remo Freuler and Chiquinho give Alguacil options to consider. In attack, Armando González, Ayoub El Kaabi and Roman Yaremchuk are among the names available as he starts to shape the team.
