Apple has added variable aperture to the 48MP Fusion Main camera on iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. The change gives iPhone 15 Pro buyers a new camera control point and pairs it with higher sustained performance and longer battery life. Greg Joswiak said Apple took “huge leaps forward” in camera, performance, battery, and intelligence.

“With iPhone 18 Pro, we’ve made advancements to the areas our users care about most: camera, performance, battery, and intelligence. And we didn’t just make incremental improvements in these areas — we took huge leaps forward to create the best Pro iPhone we’ve ever made,” Greg Joswiak said.
He also said, “iPhone 18 Pro makes it easy for anyone to capture stunning photos and videos using variable aperture, while providing more versatility for creators and more control for pros.”
Fusion Main in the Camera app
Apple says the 48MP Fusion Main camera is the most advanced camera it has ever made. Six laser-cut blades move smoothly across four aperture settings. The Main camera can adjust depth of field and lighting automatically, while users can also change aperture settings in the Camera app.
The practical effect is sharper control over how much of a scene stays in focus. That can help with low-light shots, group photos, and scenes where the background should be more or less blurred. Apple also says developers get an API for more control across the aperture range in their apps.
A20 Pro and battery life
The phones include A20 Pro and a next-generation vapour chamber. Apple says that combination delivers the highest sustained performance in iPhone history. The company also says iPhone 18 Pro Max has the largest increase in battery life ever on iPhone, tied to advances in Apple silicon and a larger battery.
That is the part buyers will want measured in real use. Apple has given a direction of travel, not independent benchmark numbers, so the strongest claim here remains the one it made for itself.
September 12 and September 18
Pre-orders begin Saturday, September 12. Availability begins Friday, September 18. Apple says the phones will ship in black, silver, glacier, and burgundy, which gives buyers a short decision window if they want one of the first units.
The remaining open question is how much better the camera output, performance, and battery life are compared with earlier Pro models. Apple has described the gains, but it has not put exact numbers on them.
