The Melbourne game matters because it is part of the league’s wider effort to build a lasting international footprint. Australia is seen as a promising market, helped by a strong sporting culture, existing infrastructure and the success of Jordan Mailata.
There is also a broader calendar reason why this trip stands out. In 2028, flag football will be an Olympic sport for the first time, and in 2032 the Summer Games will be in Australia. That gives the NFL another reason to think carefully about timing, exposure and how its product travels.
