That is the kind of update managers love to frame as routine. And to be fair, Carrick did his best to keep it calm. He said it was not an ongoing issue or some grand plan, just normal individual management, with Shaw needing time to recover properly. But the timing still matters. Shaw had already emerged as a doubt for United’s first league phase fixture in this season’s Champions League, and once he was absent from training, the alarm bells were always going to ring a little louder.

Carrick admitted the situation is still being monitored, saying they will see how he is after this one and that he is hopeful for the next match, but nobody at Old Trafford can pretend that leaving out a first-choice left-back is trivial when the calendar is about to sharpen up.
Shaw is 31 now, and this is exactly the stage where careful management becomes unavoidable rather than optional. The encouraging part for United is that this was not described as a serious setback. The worrying part is that the team is already having to think twice about how much it can demand from him in a packed spell, even before the weekend has arrived.
So yes, this was a sensible call. But it was also a reminder that United are heading into a crucial stretch with one eye fixed firmly on Shaw’s fitness, and with Patrick Dorgu ready to take the minutes whenever caution wins out.
