Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro Max camera in Cupertino, California, with a new 48MP Fusion Main camera that adds variable aperture for the first time on iPhone. The change gives users manual control over one of the few camera settings that still shapes both light capture and background blur.

iPhone 18 Pro Max Camera and the four settings
The camera uses six laser-cut blades that smoothly transition between four aperture settings, and the Camera app lets users adjust them manually. That means Apple is not just automating the lens for you; it is opening a control that can change depth of field and lighting in ways the software alone cannot fully fake.
Apple also says the new sensor improves image quality, with better low-light photography and crisper detail in the back of group photos, while the Main camera runs through a new computational imaging pipeline. The company calls it the most advanced camera it has ever made, but it did not provide benchmark comparisons or test results to show how far ahead it is.
Photographic Styles, HDR, and AI
Upgraded Photographic Styles add new texture and grain controls, and users can apply Cinematic effects after capture to videos shot at up to 60 fps. Time-lapse mode can now record in 4K and Dolby Vision HDR, which gives creators more room to tune the look after the shot is taken instead of settling for the default render.
The phones also run on A20 Pro and add iOS 27 with Apple Intelligence and Siri AI. Apple says iPhone 18 Pro Max delivers the largest increase in battery life ever on iPhone, so the Pro Max model is the one to watch if a longer shooting day matters more than the spec sheet language.
Pre-orders and availability
Pre-orders begin Saturday, September 12, and availability begins Friday, September 18. Users of iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max who care about manual exposure control now have a specific date to decide whether the new variable aperture is worth waiting for, while the open question is how the camera performs in real-world testing against previous iPhone cameras.
