Hull KR are taking an unusual but deliberate step into Saints Vs Hull Kr, with Willie Peters confirming the reigning Super League champions will rest the full squad as they prepare for the play-offs. With a place already secured and one round of the regular season left, the focus has shifted from short-term selection calls to making sure the Robins are at their best next week.
That is the key point here. Hull KR beat Huddersfield Giants 36-6 last weekend to lock in their play-off spot, and they now have a chance to manage legs after 30-odd straight weeks of rugby. The reward for that approach will be a play-off eliminator tie next weekend, when they travel to either Warrington Wolves or Wakefield.
Willie Peters: the rest is about next week
Peters was clear on Thursday morning that the St Helens game would not be treated like a normal Round 27 fixture. “It’s different to this week, we’re resting the full squad,” he said, underlining that the decision is about performance, not panic.
He added that Hull KR have reached a point in the season where the physical load matters just as much as the league table. “As a club, we’ve played 30-odd straight weeks and guys have played big minutes,” Peters said. “Giving the players a rest this week will certainly give us a good opportunity to put in our best performance next week.”
That is the logic behind the move. Hull KR could still finish fifth if results go their way, but the bigger priority is freshness. In a season where the margins tighten sharply at this stage, a tired squad can become a vulnerable one very quickly.
Injuries are part of it, but rest is the main story
Peters was also keen to separate genuine injury concerns from the wider rotation plan. “Everyone has got niggles at this time of the year, but the majority of the squad is getting rested,” he said, making it clear that this is not simply a case of an exhausted team being forced into changes.
There are still a few issues to manage. “There are some, certainly, where we need to manage injuries. Tyrone May is an example of that, he played hurt last week,” Peters explained. “There are a couple (of injuries), but mainly, the players are getting rested and we believe that will give us our best performance next week.”
That distinction matters because Hull KR’s approach against Wigan Warriors the week before last weekend was different. Peters said there were “three players that we 100% rested and possibly a fourth that could have played,” with some absences linked to genuine injuries and others to workload. Hull KR then lost 46-0 in that game, before bouncing back against Huddersfield Giants.
Now the club is taking the same principle a stage further. The lesson from the last few weeks is that this is no longer about squeezing every last point out of the regular season. It is about making sure the squad that enters the play-offs is physically and mentally ready for the real test.
For Hull KR, Saints Vs Hull Kr is less about the immediate result and more about what comes after it. If the plan works, the Robins should arrive in the eliminator with legs back under them, key players fresher, and a better chance of producing the standard Peters believes they are capable of.
