OEMC warned on September 11, 2026 that the Loop may need to be shut down during Mexican Independence Day weekend as downtown Chicago fills with festivals, concerts and parade traffic. Officials said the warning applies to Saturday and Sunday, when several major events are scheduled at once.
City officials said the crowd could reach hundreds of thousands of people, and they strongly encouraged people headed downtown to use CTA instead of driving. If vehicle access tightens, drivers may face limits on entering or crossing the Loop while crowd control moves shift traffic around the busiest blocks.
Grant Park and Little Village
The El Grito festival was scheduled at Grant Park's Butler Field from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, with Jackson closed from Columbus to DuSable Lake Shore Drive for the event. Attendees were strongly encouraged to use CTA to get there.
In Little Village, the El Grito 5k Family Walk/Run was scheduled for Sunday morning at 9 a.m. at 26th and Kostner, then to Kedzie Avenue before runners turned back down 26th Street to Manuel Perez Jr. Plaza. Little Village's annual 26th Street Mexican Independence Day Parade was set for Sunday at 12 p.m., starting at the Little Village Arch at 26th and Albany and going down 26th Street to Kostner.
Jaime Di Paulo, CEO of the Illinois Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, said the group was working with the Chicago Police Department and private security. “We're going to direct traffic.”
Loop Alliance street teams
Suzet McKinney, CEO of the Loop Alliance, said the organization would have its street teams out in full force for approximately 18 hours a day this weekend. “We're really increasing the visibility and the presence of our street teams this weekend,” she said.
“They talk to people, they ask people if they're experiencing any problems or challenges, and we believe that that increased presence and increased engagement really helps to thwart efforts that could be escalating,” McKinney said. The setup points to a weekend where organizers are trying to keep celebrations moving while also limiting car access in the busiest parts of downtown.
Commercial Avenue and Millennium Park
The annual Mexican Independence Day Parade along Commercial Avenue was scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m., running from 87th Street to 100th Street. Chief Keef was scheduled to play Huntington Bank Pavillion at Northerly Island Saturday night starting at 7:30 p.m., and the 2026 Sonic Pavillion Festival was scheduled to take over Jay Pritzker Pavillion in Millennium Park Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 1 to 4 p.m. and Monday evening from 5 to 8 p.m.
For people trying to get downtown, the practical choice is to plan around transit and street closures rather than assume normal vehicle access. The Loop warning turns Mexican Independence Day weekend into a traffic-control test as much as a celebration.
