One person was pronounced dead at the scene. Witnesses said a large gathering had assembled for the vigil, and one described the gunfire this way: “A lot of shots were fired.”

Officials said one of the victims was shot in the chest, while two victims suffered gunshot wounds to the arms and legs. Dozens of shell casings were being processed at a crime scene that stretched for several blocks, and witnesses reported seeing numerous orange evidence markers on the ground.

One witness estimated there were upwards of 20 evidence markers at the scene. That kind of scene work points to a broad search area, with investigators collecting spent casings, tracing the path of fire and matching where people were standing when the shooting began.

Morris Avenue and Newark

Investigators also said a gun was discovered on one of the victims. At the same time, officials said a red sedan was seen fleeing westbound on Morris Avenue after the shooting, and about an hour later a red sedan was found burning on Hobson Street in Newark.

That vehicle is now part of the case investigators are trying to connect to the shooting. Two people of interest have been identified, but no arrests had been made by the time of the report, and Elizabeth Police referred questions to the Union County Prosecutor's Office.
