Johanna Faries opened BlizzCon 2026 by giving Fans of the Diablo franchise two pieces of news at once: a Diablo animated TV series is in development at Netflix, and Diablo V is now being aimed at a Spring 2029 release. Diablo 5 is still years away, but Blizzard used the opening ceremony to put a date window on its next mainline game.
BlizzCon 2026 and Diablo V
Spring 2029 is the target Blizzard gave for Diablo V, which is in development at Xbox’s Blizzard Entertainment. The timing matters because Diablo IV arrived in 2023, so the gap to Diablo V will stretch across several years rather than the usual short sequel cycle.
1996 is where the franchise began, and Blizzard says the Diablo games have seen more than 130 million players worldwide to date. That scale makes the new target more than a routine scheduling note; it is the first hard window tied to the next mainline entry after Diablo IV.
Sanctuary After Diablo IV
Diablo V will be set a century after the events of Diablo IV, in a world where Sanctuary has fallen. For the first time, players will enter a Sanctuary where Diablo has triumphed and its heroes have been defeated, which gives the sequel a different starting point from the earlier games.
That setting choice is the sharpest clue about where Blizzard is taking the series next. Instead of a familiar struggle, Diablo V begins after the loss has already happened, so the game’s world is being built around aftermath rather than resistance.
Netflix and the 2030 Track
Johanna Faries also used BlizzCon 2026 to point to another piece of franchise expansion: a Diablo animated TV series is currently in development at Netflix. Blizzard stacked that announcement alongside the game update, and the pairing shows the company treating Diablo as a long-range cross-platform property rather than a single release.
Blizzard says the question now is execution, not existence. Diablo V is already in development, but the Spring 2029 target gives the team a long runway and gives Fans of the Diablo franchise a clear expectation to plan around while Blizzard builds toward the next mainline chapter.
