North Texas made Thursday night a memorable one at Norma Knobel Hunt Stadium, formally renaming the playing surface John Hedlund Field before the team followed with a 10-0 win over Nelson.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony marked a permanent tribute to Hedlund, the longtime North Texas soccer coach. School and American Conference officials were part of the event, including athletic director Jared Mosley, as the program celebrated one of its defining figures in front of a home crowd.
A tribute built on sustained success
North Texas players wore shirts honoring the 16 conference titles the program has won under Hedlund, adding another layer to a night already centered on his legacy. The field now carries his name at Norma Knobel Hunt Stadium, giving the ceremony a lasting place in the program's history.
Hedlund said it was a special night for him and his family. He also made clear that he sees the honor as one shared by everyone who helped build the program, thanking Jared Mosley and the board of regents and pointing to the players, coaches and staff who represented UNT over the years.
“There are so many people involved,” Hedlund said, adding that he was humbled by the gesture and that it will be great to come back to games and see his name in a few places.
UNT follows the ceremony with a shutout
The on-field result gave North Texas a fitting finish to the evening. After the ceremony, UNT beat Nelson 10-0, turning the debut of John Hedlund Field into a double-digit shutout win.
That combination of celebration and performance gave the night clear meaning for the program. The naming of the field recognized decades of success, while the result showed North Texas was able to handle its business once the ceremony ended.
For a program that has built its identity around consistency, Thursday brought both a tribute to the past and a clean result in the present.
