This is not the kind of home form Celta can keep waving away. Claudio Giráldez said as much on Saturday, and the message was blunt enough: before Málaga arrive in Balaídos, Celta need to start competing better in their own stadium and turning promising passages into results.
That is the uncomfortable truth hanging over this LaLiga meeting. Giráldez was keen to stress that the football has not all been poor, and he is right to say there have been plenty of positive signs in the way Celta are trying to play. But in the end, a team does not get to hide behind neat phases and encouraging ideas forever. If the home results are not there, the pressure grows.
A good idea is not enough
Giráldez’s comments were clear on the balance he wants. He wants Celta to stay focused, to be positive, to press well, to stay organised in a low block when needed and to make opponents run behind the ball. Fine. That is the framework. But he also admitted the obvious: Celta must be much more aggressive in attacking transitions and in the final third if they want to create more chances. He said there was already some evolution in that area in the last match, which at least suggests the message is landing.
Still, the larger point remains. Celta can talk about good football and positive readings all they like, but until the results at Balaídos improve, the conversation is going to stay uncomfortable. Home support wants more than tidy structure and decent intentions. It wants points.
Injuries are not making life easier
The selection picture is hardly ideal, either. Andrés Antañón has been ruled out with a sprained ankle, while Borja Iglesias had another issue in the soleus area during the week, leaving his availability in doubt and prompting caution from the coach. Giráldez made it plain that Celta will be prudent with him.
There was at least a more encouraging note with Febas, who is nearing a return after a rib contusion that kept him out against Real Sociedad and Getafe. That matters, because these are the kind of absences that can narrow the margin for error in a game like this. And when a team is already trying to correct a home problem, every missing piece becomes a bigger story.
So the task before Málaga is simple to state, and harder to execute: Celta need to back up the coach’s words with a sharper, more ruthless performance at Balaídos. Giráldez has identified the issue. Now his side have to prove they can actually fix it.
