David Arquette said the Courteney Cox tribute Hayden Panettiere conversation has turned painful as he gets ready to take Scream back on the road for the 30th anniversary tour. He said fan Q&As can push him into “tough conversations,” because Hayden Panettiere died at 36 after going into cardiac arrest.

“A lot of them are like, 'What's your favorite scary movie?' and stuff like that, and you kind of feel boring saying the same answer over and over again,” Arquette said ahead of the Behind the Scream 30th Anniversary Tour. He added, “I tend to be a pretty open book, so I sometimes put my foot in my mouth and talk about things that are outdated, from 30 years ago.”
He also made the stakes plain: “You always just want to be respectful of other people in the film. There's gonna be tough conversations. We just lost Hayden, who was in Scream 4, so that was really painful, so things like that come up.”
Scream 4 in Ann Arbor
Arquette said the Scream 4 group “really hit it off” while filming in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He recalled a break that took the cast to Lollapalooza in Chicago, and said they rented a cabin up there. Those memories now sit alongside a death that landed far more abruptly: Panettiere died on August 16, 2026, at age 36.
That mix of celebration and grief is exactly what the tour will force into the same room. A 30th-anniversary event built around screenings and Q&As invites nostalgia, but Arquette is already warning that the questions will not stay in the safe lane.

Arquette also pointed fans to Panettiere’s memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, which he said came out just three months before her death. “There's tons of them. She was just such a wonderful person, great spirit, just so alive, and just a bright light,” he said. He added, “She was just a really wonderful person, we all just had so much fun,” and, “It really was some of the greatest times of our lives.”
