Noah Reid is heading into Schitt's Creek territory with a different kind of setup: he has been tapped for one episode of CBS' upcoming second season of Sheriff Country as Dr. Hudson “Hud” Henshaw. The casting also carries a series regular option if CBS moves ahead with the planned medical drama spinoff in the Fire Country–Sheriff Country universe.
That structure is deliberate. CBS used the same path with Sheriff Country itself, first introducing Morena Baccarin as Sheriff Mickey Fox on Fire Country before the spinoff was picked up to series, so Reid's role is not just a guest spot but a possible launch point for a larger franchise play.
Hud Henshaw at Edgewater Memorial Hospital
Reid will play the Chief of Emergency Medicine at Edgewater Memorial Hospital, and the character's background gives the setup some built-in friction. Hud was born and raised in Deadwater, is the proud son of convicted felons, and refused to take the family's drug money to pay for medical school.
The character is also described as deeply committed to the community he grew up in. Deadline characterized that commitment with the phrase “first do no harm,” which points to a role designed to carry moral weight, not just drop in for a procedural beat.
Season 2 of Sheriff Country
Season 2 of Sheriff Country premieres on CBS on Oct. 9, putting Reid's appearance directly into the rollout for the series' next stretch. For a network launch strategy, that timing matters because the guest role can function as a soft introduction to a new corner of the franchise without requiring CBS to commit to a full order first.
The planned spinoff would follow a medical team in Edgewater, California, and the untitled project is informally referred to as Edge Med. It is being developed at CBS Studios and executive produced by Matt Lopez, Max Thieriot, Joan Rater, Tony Phelan, Jerry Bruckheimer, and KristieAnne Reed.
Reid's 2015 to 2024 run
Reid brings more than recognition from Schitt's Creek. He previously played the title character on the 2015 ABC Family comedy series Kevin From Work, won a Canadian Screen Award for his performance on Schitt's Creek, and shared a Comedy Ensemble SAG Award with the cast.
He was also a series regular on Prime Video's Outer Range, and he has an upcoming role in Bell and Crave's Yaga, which will be carried in the U.S. by AMC+. That kind of résumé makes a one-episode booking useful for CBS: it gives the network a recognizable lead-in performer while leaving the spinoff itself uncommitted until the pilot-stage logic pays off.
Will CBS order the untitled Edge Med spinoff to series? That is the real business question behind the casting, because Reid's role can stay a one-off if the network passes, or become the opening move in a new medical branch of the Fire Country–Sheriff Country universe if it does not.
