The Detroit Red Wings have reached training camp with the most important front-office chair still empty, and that is not exactly the sort of calm, controlled setup anyone wants heading into a new season. Shawn Horcoff is handling the daily hockey duties for now, but this is still an organization working through a transition rather than one projecting certainty.
That matters because camp is not the time for vague answers. The Red Wings are due to gather at Little Caesars three days after Monday, Sept. 14, and the club is entering that stretch without a permanent GM in place. Steve Yzerman moved from general manager to senior advisor two months ago, leaving the team to keep operating while the search for a replacement continues.
The search, by all accounts, has been a serious one. In late August, a person with knowledge of the situation told the Free Press the process was “really super thorough,” and the organization has made clear that analytics is a key qualification for the next top hockey executive. That is a sensible place to start. The modern NHL does not reward clubs that make major decisions with nostalgia and hope alone.
But there is also an awkward reality here: while Shawn Horcoff is handling day-to-day business, the biggest calls are not entirely his to make. The article says ownership has retained control over trading or re-signing players during the vacancy, which tells you everything about how unresolved this situation still is. A team can function that way for a short spell. It is harder to argue it is the best long-term structure.
Camp starts, but the questions do not disappear
There is at least one piece of straightforward good news for Detroit. Dylan Larkin said on Friday that he would report to camp, after requesting a trade in mid-April shortly after the season ended. That removes one obvious distraction from the opening days, and it matters because the Red Wings cannot afford to begin the 2026-27 season with every conversation circling back to uncertainty.
Still, Larkin showing up does not solve the broader issue. The Red Wings are trying to build a forward-looking operation while their leadership picture remains incomplete. The vacancy is temporary only in the technical sense. In practical terms, it is the kind of delay that can shape how outsiders read the entire organization: not broken, perhaps, but not quite settled either.
That is why Horcoff’s role matters so much right now. He is the one keeping the machine moving, at least on a daily basis, while the club searches for the right fit above him. But the next GM hire will ultimately define how the Red Wings want to be judged in the coming years. If analytics really is a core requirement, then the organization is not just filling a job. It is signaling a direction.
For now, though, the message is simpler than that. Training camp is almost here, the GM seat is still vacant, and the Red Wings are once again asking people to trust the process before they have even fully explained who is driving it.
