Aaron Rai and Joakim Lagergren shared the first-round lead at the BMW PGA Championship after both players carded six-under 66s at Wentworth.
Rai made seven birdies and one bogey in a round that put him at the top of the leaderboard alongside Lagergren, whose only DP World Tour win came back in 2018. The opening day also left a number of well-known names within striking distance, setting up a crowded chase over the next three rounds.
McIlroy stays in the mix despite late stumble
Rory McIlroy was among the players trying to make a move as he pursued a record-equalling eighth Race to Dubai title. He had reached five under after 10 holes, but finished his round at three under after a late stumble.
That still kept him near the top of the standings conversation, with the article noting that Patrick Reed was the only player above McIlroy in the Race to Dubai. McIlroy had also impressed earlier in the week, covering the course in 60 during Wednesday's pro-am.
The leaderboard behind Rai and Lagergren was tightly packed, with several players positioned to challenge if they can put together a clean second round. Jon Rahm played alongside Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood, adding more star power to a field that already had plenty of attention on it.
The bigger picture is straightforward: the BMW PGA Championship opened with a shared lead, but the gap remained small enough that one strong round could reshape everything quickly at Wentworth.
