40 to 50 houses were in play before Kingston Russell House won the role of the Dashwood family home. Hutchinson, the supervising location manager, said the aim was to “keep it as true to the book as possible,” and that the production wanted scenes to “flow from the outside to the inside.”
Georgia Oakley’s approach meant the locations had to do more than look period-correct. Real places across Sussex, Devon and London gave the cast continuity between exterior and interior scenes, which is harder to fake when a film leans on a single built set. That is a practical production choice, not just a scenic one.
Kingston Russell House in Dorset
Kingston Russell House had not appeared on screen before, and Eddie Pierce found it while out on a bike ride. Hutchinson said, “I can't always do that with every location, but to make that happen for one of our key locations for the movie, it was very rewarding.”
The house now stands in for Norland Park at the start of the story, giving the film one fixed anchor inside an otherwise location-led shoot. For a period adaptation, that can help the production preserve a consistent visual line while still moving through countryside and town settings.
Regency England details
The production also used Dartmoor and the Jurassic Coast in Dorset for the sweeping countryside material that sits outside the Dashwood home. That fits a film built around Regency England spaces, though some viewers have already picked up one styling detail they read as anachronistic to Regency England.
That clash is the wrinkle here: the film aims for fidelity to Jane Austen’s world, but the finished image is still being judged shot by shot by viewers who know the period’s visual codes. Hutchinson’s method gives the adaptation a strong location base, and the next test is whether those choices hold once Sense and Sensibility reaches UK cinemas later in the month.
