Caleb Williams' status has quickly become the key Bears storyline after Ben Johnson said the quarterback is likely week to week with a hamstring injury. With Chicago already dealing with a quarterback availability issue heading into Week 3, the immediate concern is whether Williams can recover in time for Next Monday night's game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Williams exited Sunday night's 9-3 loss to the Minnesota Vikings after a fourth-quarter scramble, and the next update came on Monday when Johnson spoke on 1000. The Bears had Williams undergo an MRI exam, and the head coach said the early read was encouraging, though not enough to rule out missed time.
Johnson: 'somewhat encouraging' but still week to week
Johnson did not sound alarmed, but he was clear that the injury should be treated carefully. He said, "It sounds like it's gonna be a week-to-week deal for him," and added that he still needed to speak with the trainer before getting the full picture.
He also described the MRI results as "somewhat encouraging" and suggested the Bears may have potentially "dodged a bullet," but that does not change the basic reality: hamstring injuries can become worse if a player comes back too soon. That is why Williams' availability for Week 3 remains uncertain.
The Bears may need a backup plan
If Williams cannot play against the Eagles, Chicago would need to turn to Tyson Bagent. That possibility matters because the Bears are only just into the 2026 season, and any extended absence at quarterback would force Johnson to adjust quickly.
For now, the best-case scenario is that Williams responds well over the coming days and is available next Monday night. The more cautious view is that the Bears will protect their starter and make sure the hamstring does not become a longer-term issue. Either way, the Week 3 conversation is no longer just about the result against Minnesota. It is about who lines up at quarterback when the Eagles arrive.
