This is not just another Conference USA road trip. Kennesaw State’s first-ever visit to Arkansas State gives Saturday night’s game a little extra bite, a little extra familiarity for one man in particular, and a little extra pressure on a team trying to get back to.500.
The Owls are 1-2, which means there is no room for drifting around and pretending this is still early-season noise. They need a result, and they need it in Jonesboro, Ark., on Saturday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. ET. Arkansas State comes in at 1-2 as well, although the Red Wolves are listed at 0-0 in Sun Belt play, which only sharpens the sense that this is a game both sides can use to steady themselves.
A homecoming with stakes attached
The headline attraction is Jerry Mack. The Kennesaw State head coach is not just returning to Arkansas State in the professional sense; he is going back to the place where he graduated and played wide receiver from 2001-03. That matters. Coaches always talk about treating these things like any other game, but they are not blind to the optics. A return to a former college home always carries a bit of weight, especially when the trip comes with a chance to leave with a win.
That would be the cleanest version of the story. But there is also the football itself, which has not exactly been shy about giving Kennesaw State a reason for confidence. The defense has been producing turnovers early in the season, and that is the kind of trait that travels. That does not guarantee anything on Saturday, of course. Football never promises that. But it does suggest there are enough active pieces here to make this more than a sleepy non-event.
So yes, this is a road game. It is also a reunion of sorts. But the real question is simpler than all that: whether Kennesaw State can take the same edge that carried it to a 21-0 start last year and turn it into another result that keeps the season moving in the right direction.
