A FlyDubai flight from Dubái to Israel made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Arabia Saudí, on Wednesday after an altercation in the cockpit. Israeli media said the plane sent an emergency alert and that passengers were safe after the diversion.
Tabuk landing after sharp descent
The flight had been bound for Tel Aviv and was about two and a half hours out of Dubái when it dropped abruptly from 33,000 feet to 17,000 feet in one minute. It then flew an erratic circle near the Jordanian border before landing in Tabuk about an hour later, a route change that turned a routine commercial trip into a security response.
The Ministry of Transportation of Israel said the plane was diverted because of an altercation among the crew. A regional official said a fight took place in the cockpit and appeared to involve the pilots, while the cause of the fight was still unclear and the crew was questioned as part of the investigation.
Israel deploys fighter jets
Israel deployed fighter jets after the emergency landing, and Benjamin Netanyahu said he was following the situation and that measures would be taken to ensure the safe return of the Israeli passengers to Israel. For passengers, the immediate practical effect was simple: the aircraft did not continue to Tel Aviv, and the airline and Israeli authorities shifted to securing the people on board.
Hijacking concern and dispute
Israeli media cited security officials as saying the episode may have been an attempt to attack Israelis, and the same reporting said the co-pilot was suspected of trying to hijack the plane. Other reporting said the incident was caused by a dispute between the two pilots, showing how the same cockpit event was being read in two different ways while the investigation stayed open.
This kind of emergency landing for staff-related reasons is unusual but not unheard of. In 2022, two Air France pilots were suspended after fighting in the cockpit on a Geneva-Paris flight, and that flight was not diverted. In this case, the aircraft did divert, passengers were moved out of the immediate danger zone, and the open investigation now has to sort out whether the event was a personal fight, a security threat, or both.
