Michelle Gill Petition Forces State Pension Age Response

Michelle Gill’s petition calling for the state pension age to be cut to 65 for everyone has crossed the 10,000-signature line and triggered a Government response. It drew 11,389 signatures after being published on September 16, putting the proposal into the formal reply process while the current timetable keeps moving the state pension age from 66 to 67.

Gill’s petition says lower retirement age would let older workers retire with greater dignity. She also wrote: “We also think it could free up jobs for younger workers entering the labour market.”

The petition was posted on the petition website on September 16 and remained open through March 16, 2027. On October 1, an update on the site stated: “Government will respond to this petition.”

That update came because the petition reached the 10,000-signature threshold that triggers a Government reply. A petition needs 100,000 signatures before it is considered for debate in Parliament, so this one has cleared the first formal hurdle but not the second.

State Pension age timetable

The petition is aimed at the current plan for the State Pension age. Under existing legislation, it is increasing from 66 to 67 between April 2026 and April 2028, with the change affecting people born from April 6, 1960.

The timetable also sets out a further rise from 67 to 68 between 2044 and 2046. Future changes remain subject to review and legislation, so the petition is pressing against a route already laid out in law.

Will the Government

The petition’s signatures do not alter the age itself. They do, however, require a reply from The Government, and that response will show whether ministers support, reject or modify the call to cut the State Pension age to 65 for everyone.

For people aged between 65 and 67, the petition keeps the issue in view while the present timetable continues toward 67 by March 2028. The immediate next step is the Government’s written response; the petition remains open until March 16, 2027.
